Mastodon - The Hunter
Mastodon’s new 5th album. Yeah look it’s no concept album like previous albums (but really who fully understands a concept album other than the artists anyway) Songs are a little shorter but still as punchy & brutal as ever. I guess a little more concise and polished. Not the ‘10mins prog rock guitar wanderings solos’ like on Crack the Skye (which I still love). Just great riffs, great vocal hooks. Solid drums. Enjoy some of my favs atm. Friday, 16 September 2011

The Mark Of Cain - Ill at Ease
Now that Triple J Top 100 Aussie Albums is over i can talk about- The Mark Of Cain. My only album that didn't get in and why?! .... Seriously an awesome album, yeah sure not to much commercial success but that still doesn't make it a great album. There's something about a three piece band that I love. Maybe it's the simplicity of it all - drums, guitar, bass & vocals all in prefect timing. I dunno. I'll let the album speak for itself. Definitely one of my favs from the 90's. I don't think the live recordings do it justice but that's all youtube has. Pretty hard to get good album recordings, Here's a few. Enjoy.
Hey it actually made it into the top 200- Number 195!
Little Miss Australia (Heart breaker)
There's been news of another album soon. Fingers crossed!

Into the Wild
What a great book, great movie, awesome soundtrack. Tho we are talking about Eddie Vedder here so you really can't go wrong. He just captures the essence of this movie perfectly. The freedom of the wild, the isolation. the joy of the open road. I've always love the idea of taking off. Leaving this modern rat race behind. Buying a farm in the bush, building a shack and living off the land. Living a simpler life. Tho one thing is for sure I wouldn't pick Alaska. Too cold! Maybe a tropical island. I would need music too so not sure how'd I'd get round that one. Maybe a coconut radio like Gillian's Island. Anyway brillant soundtrack.
Check out the original too. Johnny-what a poser!

Maya Jane Coles
Shit! I haven't posted in a while. I'll just do a few quick ones of what's been going thru my ears lately. Been listening to this London house producer/dj. Never really got into house, tho never really listened to much either. But I like this. It's smooth & deep. Very hypnotic. Great for listening to at work & zoning out. Check it out. All her stuffs good.

Alternative Country Mix
Country music would have to my least favourite genre of all time- no really- I hate it! It probably came from my dad playing ‘Conway Twitty’ and ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ in the car as a kid. I just can’t stand it. That said, I’ve made an alternative country mix. For those times when you have to listen to country but you just can’t go there. Yee haw!
Ween - Piss Up A Rope
Pretty hard to define these guys. Experimental/alternative/psychedelic rock and just to confuse everyone even more in 1996, they released 12 Golden Country Greats - a full country album. And it’s gold! They do country better than country artists. This song cracks me up.
Kill Devil Hills - Drinkin’ Too Much
I saw these guys supporting The Living End. Weird line up but they were amazing. Picture- a band of odd-ball country hicks. Hmmm doesn’t sound so appealing does it. Trust me- they had such a fantastic energy on stage. This song was definitely the crowd favourite. All the alco's- charge your glass, sing along and feel the desperation ‘everything I touch turns to shit, but you are the exception to it’Primus - Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver
If you're ever in need a good old hoedown, this is the song. I remember seeing the video clip late at night on Rage, half asleep and thinking ‘am i dreaming or is this song for real?!’ Always a party favourite of mine.
Puscifer – Cuntry Boner
Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to post this song. If you’re not into the words ‘f*ck and 12 inch plastic pole in the same sentence, probably not the song for you. Ah Maynard, never scared to piss off a whole genre.

Puscifer
I first heard Puscifer’s ‘V’ is for Vagina album a few years ago when it came out. It's the side project of Maynard James Keenan, frontman for Tool & A Perfect Circle. It was good but as a massive fan of Tool & A Perfect Circle, it was just a little left field. This album is nothing like he’s done before & pretty hard to define, very experimental to say the least. Stand out tracks for me were definitely ‘Momma Sed’. But the rest didn’t really capture me at the time. Have a listen for yourself. But lately and what’s gotten me to re-listen to ‘V’ is for Vagina is the remix album -‘V’ is for Viagra.
The depth of these tracks is just amazing. There not just remixes of the original songs, there songs unto their own. Which made me go back to the original songs & really appreciate them. A lot of credit does have to go the guest remix artists and it’s a diverse group including Lustmord, Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv, Troy Van Leeuwen of QOSTA & APC, Joey Jordison of Slipknot. Mate! The list goes on and on. Google it if you interested. But having said that, these remixes would be nothing without the starting point of “V” is for Vagina. Adding to the fact that Maynard is a bloody musical genius. Whatever genre, whatever style.
In my opinion the man shits gold for breakfast!
Here’s some favs from V is for Viagra:
Remixed by Josh Eustis
Remixed by Dave 'Rave' Ogilvie of Skippy Puppy & Colin Janz
Remixed By Danny Lohner of Nine Inch Nails
For the Village: Momma Sed (Alive at Club Nokia) on the “C” is For (Please insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference Here) album. ‘Push it Live’ all over again. Brilliant!

Burial, Four Tet & Thom Yorke - Ego/Mirror 12"
Burial, Four Tet & Thom Yorke - Ego/Mirror 12" by Izvinitie
I was stoked to hear that Burial, Four Tet & Thom York were working together on a 12” EP. What a combo of artists and this doesn’t fail to deliver either. You can definitely hear each artist’s influence here. Burial with his deep dark medolic bass lines, Four Tet’s quirky melodies and the unmistakable voice of Tom York. Enjoy

Burial - Street Halo [Hyperdub]
I recently discover Burial and I have been addicted ever since, trying to hunt down every EP and album. He would have to be one of my favourite dubstep/ambient producers. Until a few years ago he was anonymous, only stating that “I’m a low key person and I just want to make some tunes, nothing else” Brillant. So it’s been 4 years since his last release and this week he released an EP entitled “Street Halo” and it’s a cracker. Dark, haunting sounds. You just get lost in the atmosphere. I can’t get enough and I hope there’s a full album to follow up. Note: This only just come out, so I could only find a vinyl rip so excuse the crackling, but I reckon it just adds to the dark texture. And I’m not sure if the clip is actually made for the song, but it fits and it’s pretty cool.
